Remove PDF password on Mac with Preview

If you use macOS, Preview is often the fastest option — the file never leaves your Mac:

  1. Open in Preview — double-click the PDF or right-click → Open WithPreview. Type the password when asked.
  2. Export as PDF — menu File → Export as PDF… (important: choose Export, not Save).
  3. Save the new file — pick a name and location. The exported PDF is typically unencrypted and can be printed or copied freely.

Preview only works when you already know the password; it does not crack or guess passwords. If Export is greyed out, unlock the file first or try File → Duplicate and save the duplicate.

Use this browser tool instead when:

  • You are on Windows, Linux, Chromebook, or a phone/tablet
  • Preview export still leaves restrictions on the file
  • You want the same private unlock flow on any device without installing software

How to remove a PDF password

  1. Upload the PDF — click Choose PDF and select the password-protected file from your device.
  2. Enter the password — type the document’s current password in the password field. This is the password you use to open (or print/copy) the PDF.
  3. Unlock & download — click Remove Password. An unlocked copy is saved directly to your device.

What types of PDF encryption are removed?

PDF files can have two kinds of passwords:

  • User password (open password) — required to open the file at all. You must know this password for the tool to work.
  • Owner password (permissions password) — restricts printing, copying, or editing even when the file can be opened without a password. This tool removes both types when the correct password is provided.

Why process locally instead of uploading?

Unlocking a PDF requires the password. Sending both the encrypted file and its password to a third-party server is a significant security risk. Bodhixt’s tool decrypts your PDF using pdf-lib running entirely inside your browser:

  • The password never leaves your device.
  • The original file is not sent anywhere.
  • Ideal for confidential documents, payslips, contracts, and banking statements.

Frequently asked questions

I don’t know the password — can the tool still remove it? No. This tool decrypts PDFs using the correct password you supply. It does not crack or brute-force unknown passwords.

The tool says “Incorrect password” but I’m sure the password is right. Some PDF editors set a blank owner password. Try leaving the password field empty and clicking Remove Password.

What if the PDF has no password but editing is still blocked? Try submitting the file with an empty password field. Some “restricted” PDFs have an empty owner password that can be cleared this way.

Is the original file affected? No. The tool reads your original file, creates a new decrypted copy in memory, and downloads that copy. Your original file is not modified.

Does Mac Preview do the same thing as this tool? For many PDFs, yes — Export as PDF creates a new file without the original encryption, as long as you could open the document. This browser tool is the cross-platform alternative when Preview is not available or export does not clear restrictions.
