Visitor visa
Thai visitors need a visitor visa — not an ETA
Not on Appendix ETA — Standard Visitor visa
Thailand is not on Appendix ETA. A Thai passport needs a Standard Visitor visa to visit the UK. This is the opposite of many Western passports visiting Thailand. TG and BA from Suvarnabhumi will check for a visa, not an ETA. Malaysia next door is an ETA nationality — that does not help a Thai passport. Apply on GOV.UK. Dual British–Thai citizens travel British. Do not buy an ETA from a Bangkok travel shop. Processing is a visa wait, not the minutes-scale ETA decision Americans screenshot on social media.

Mistakes thai visitors make
- Copying a Malaysian friend’s ETA steps.
- Arriving without a visa because you had a UK visa years ago that expired.
London notes for Thai arrivals
BKK–LHR often T2/T3. With a valid visitor visa, use contactless on TfL. A visitor visa is not a route to paid spa or restaurant work.
FAQs
- Can Thais get a UK ETA?
- No. Standard Visitor visa.
- Why Malaysia yes and Thailand no?
- Immigration Rules list nationalities individually. Neighbours are not treated as a bloc.
- Can I apply in Bangkok on the day I fly?
- Do not plan on it. Visitor visas need GOV.UK plus biometrics. That is not an airport stamp.
