British citizens do not need a UK ETA

British citizens — no ETA

British citizens do not apply for a UK ETA. If you have dual nationality, fly on the British passport so the carrier does not look for an ETA on your other document. British Overseas Territories Citizen passports have their own exemption in the caseworker guidance when travelling on a BOTC passport — check GOV.UK if that is you. Friends visiting you from the US or EU still need ETAs. You cannot apply for an ETA on their behalf through a British login in a way that replaces their own application; each traveller uses the official app/site against their own passport. An expired British passport is not a substitute — renew it.

Mistakes british citizens make

  • Dual nationals presenting only the foreign passport at check-in.
  • Telling visiting family they are ‘exempt because you are British’. They are not.

London notes for British arrivals

You already know the city. For guests: send them /uk/eta for their passport, not this page. Congestion Charge and ULEZ apply to vehicles, not passports.

FAQs

Do British citizens need an ETA to come home?
No.
I am British and American. Which passport?
Use the British passport for UK immigration. The US passport would need an ETA if you presented only that.

Bodhixt is not affiliated with UKVI. Confirm on GOV.UK before you book. Apply via https://www.gov.uk/eta only.
