JKPSC CCE follows the standard three-tier UPSC-style pattern. Prelims is objective with negative marking; Mains is descriptive with optional subject; Interview carries 250 marks toward final merit.

- Prelims: 2 hours per paper; negative marking of 0.33 marks per wrong answer
- GS Paper II (CSAT) is qualifying — candidates must secure minimum prescribed marks
- Prelims marks are not counted in final merit — screening stage only
- Mains: 8 papers, 2 hours each; English (300 marks) is qualifying
- Mains merit papers: Essay + GS I–IV + Optional I & II (250 marks each, except English)
- Interview: 250 marks — board assesses personality, communication and administrative aptitude
- Final merit = Mains written (excluding qualifying English) + Interview

- Two essays on contemporary themes — social, economic, political and environmental

- Practice structured introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion under 3-hour limit
Mains — Optional Subject (Papers VII & VIII)
- Choose one optional from JKPSC list at Mains application (e.g. Public Administration, History, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, Law, Mathematics)
- Two descriptive papers — 250 marks each, degree-level depth
- Answers in English or as specified in the notification
- Optional marks count toward Mains merit and final ranking
Personality Test / Interview
- DAF-based questions — education, hobbies, work experience, home district
- J&K current affairs — government schemes, administrative challenges, local issues
- Optional subject basics and situational judgment for civil services
- Communication skills, confidence and ethical reasoning assessed by the board
Selection Process
- Preliminary Examination — 2 papers (GS-I & GS-II), 200 marks each, objective MCQ (screening)
- Main Examination — 8 descriptive papers (English qualifying + Essay + GS I–IV + Optional I & II)
- Personality Test / Interview — 250 marks
- Document Verification, Medical & Character Verification
- Service allocation — Administrative, Police (G) or Accounts (G) as per merit and preference

Preparation Tips
- Focus on J&K-specific GK — Dogra history, Kashmir valley geography, UT governance, handicrafts economy and current affairs (last 12 months).
- For Prelims CSAT, practise comprehension, logical reasoning and Class X-level numeracy daily — it is qualifying but eliminates many candidates.
- Mains Essay: prepare outlines on themes like Article 370 reorganisation, tourism economy, youth unemployment and climate change in the Himalayas.
- Choose an optional subject you have studied at graduation — consistency across Paper VII and VIII is critical for Mains merit.
- For the Personality Test, revise your DAF, optional subject basics and recent J&K government schemes (Mission Youth, Back to Village, etc.).
- Solve JKPSC CCE previous year papers — prelims pattern mirrors UPSC with added J&K emphasis.
