Assam Police written test is OMR-based. Most constable and fire posts carry a 50-mark written paper. Merit combines PET (40) + Written (50 or 100) + NCC (5) + Viva (5) + post-specific tests (10) = 100–150 total depending on post.

Exam Pattern

  • PET carries 40 marks — must qualify before written test
  • Written test: 50 marks for constable, fireman, forest guard group; 100 marks for Forester Grade-I
  • NCC certificate holders may get up to 5 bonus marks
  • Oral/Viva Voce: 5 marks for applicable posts
  • Bandman/Bugler: Trade Proficiency Test (10 marks); Boatman: Swimming & Boating (10 marks)
  • PST is qualifying — height and chest standards vary by category and post

Syllabus — Subject-wise Topics

Written Test — General Knowledge (High Weightage)

  • Assam history — Ahom kingdom, British era, statehood, Bihu culture
  • Assam geography — Brahmaputra valley, Barak valley, national parks (Kaziranga, Manas)
  • Indian history, polity and Constitution basics
  • National and Assam current affairs (last 12 months)
  • Government schemes — state and central

Written Test — Elementary Mathematics & Reasoning

  • Number system, percentage, ratio, average, profit & loss
  • Time & work, time & distance, simple interest
  • Logical reasoning — series, analogy, coding-decoding
  • Mental ability and data interpretation (basic)

Written Test — Language (English / Assamese / Bengali)

  • Grammar, vocabulary and comprehension
  • Fill in the blanks, error spotting, sentence correction
  • Candidates may answer in Assamese, Bengali or English as per notification

PET — Physical Efficiency Test

  • 1600 m run (male) / 800 m run (female) — time standards as per notification
  • Long jump and high jump events
  • Must qualify PET before appearing for written test
  • Medical fitness certificate required

Selection Process

  1. Physical Efficiency Test (PET) — 40 marks; qualifying fitness events
  2. Physical Standard Test (PST) — height, chest measurement (post-wise standards)
  3. Medical Examination — fitness as per SLPRB norms
  4. Written Test — 50 marks OMR (100 for Forester Grade-I)
  5. Walking Test — Forester, Forest Guard, Game Watcher (where applicable)
  6. Oral / Viva Voce — 5 marks
  7. Trade Proficiency Test — Bandman, Bugler (10 marks)
  8. Swimming & Boating Test — Boatman (10 marks)
  9. Document Verification & appointment

Preparation Tips

  • Assam GK is critical — Brahmaputra districts, Ahom history, Kaziranga/Manas, Bihu festivals and Assam current affairs.
  • Practise Class X maths — percentage, ratio, time-speed-distance and basic reasoning daily.
  • Start PET training early — 1600 m run and long jump standards are strict; medical fitness is mandatory.
  • Verify PST measurements — height 162.5 cm (male UR), chest 80 cm before applying.
