The 21-day IRS direct-deposit rule
IRS says most e-filed returns with direct deposit pay in about 21 days after the return is accepted — not after you hit submit in software. Acceptance usually takes a day if the return has no rejects.
Paper returns, amended returns, and returns stuck in identity review are not on that clock. A mismatched bank account sends a paper check instead of a deposit.
PATH Act refund date 2027 (EITC and ACTC)
If you claim Earned Income Tax Credit or additional child tax credit, the PATH Act bars IRS from issuing that refund before mid-February. This hub uses Feb 15, 2027 as the earliest issue date and Feb 27, 2027 as a typical error-free direct deposit.
W-2-only returns without those credits often follow the 21-day rule. Claiming both W-2 wages and EITC still puts you on the PATH calendar for the whole refund, not just the credit piece.
What delays a federal tax refund
Identity verification (IP PIN missing, name/SSN mismatch), math errors, unreported 1099 income, and prior-year debts are the usual stalls. IRS will mail or post a notice — Where’s My Refund will not show a dollar until the hold clears.
- Paper Form 1040: typically 6–8 weeks, not 21 days.
- Amended 1040-X: often up to 16 weeks.
- Treasury Offset Program: student loans, child support, or federal/state tax debt can intercept some or all of the refund.
- Bank rejects (closed account, wrong routing): IRS reissues a check, which adds weeks.
W-2, 1099, and when you can file
Employers must furnish W-2s by January 31. Filing before your last W-2 or 1099 arrives is how people trigger math errors and delayed refunds. Self-employed filers wait on 1099-NEC/1099-K and estimated-tax worksheets — there is no PATH delay unless they also claim EITC/ACTC.
The estimated 2027 deadline in this hub is Apr 15, 2027 (typical mid-April). Extensions to file are not extensions to pay.
State tax refunds are separate
This tool is federal only. California FTB, New York DTF, and other states run their own calendars and Where’s My Refund pages. A federal deposit date says nothing about a state refund — and some states offset federal refunds through TOP.
No-wage-tax states (Texas, Florida, Washington, etc.) still have a federal refund if you over-withheld IRS. Run next year’s withholding on the paycheck calculator so you are not lending the IRS an interest-free loan.
