SSA pays most retirement and disability benefits on Wednesdays by birth date. SSI is the 1st (or the previous Friday if the 1st is a weekend or federal holiday). September 2026 has no weekend shift for the 1st.

How SSA schedules pay (same rules as ssa.gov)
After May 1997, ongoing Social Security is paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday depending on whether the birth date is 1–10, 11–20 or 21–31. SSI uses the first of the month. People who started Social Security before May 1997 (and many who get both SS and SSI) stay on the 3rd-of-month group.

Know which schedule you are on
SSI is usually the 1st. Legacy / dual SS+SSI Social Security is often the 3rd. Everyone else is a Wednesday by birth date.

1st is a Tuesday so SSI does not slide. 3rd is a Thursday. Birthday groups: 9, 16, 23 September.

COLA for the next year is announced by SSA (typically mid-October). September has no bonus in the regular calendar.

Is there a September bonus check?
No extra SSA payment in the regular calendar. Treat ‘extra COLA’ social posts as unverified until SSA publishes COLA.
The 1st was a weekend last month — why is SSI on the 1st in September?
When the 1st is Saturday, Sunday or a federal holiday, SSI is paid the previous Friday. 1 September 2026 is a Tuesday, so SSI stays on the 1st.
I get SSI and Social Security — one deposit or two?
Often two dates: SSI on the 1st (here 1 Sep) and the Social Security portion on the 3rd (here 3 Sep). That is not a duplicate bonus.
Which birthday — mine or the worker’s?
SSA uses the date of birth on the record that entitles the benefit (the worker’s record for many survivors/auxiliaries). Check your my Social Security account if unsure.
