Exam Pattern

  • Total questions: 200 (50 GK + 50 English + 100 Civil Engineering)
  • Total marks: 400 (100 + 100 + 200)
  • Negative marking and duration will be stated in the official exam instructions on the admit card
  • Technical (Civil) paper carries the highest weightage — 50% of total marks

Syllabus — Subject-wise Topics

General English

  • Basic grammar, tenses and voices
  • Narration and active/passive voice
  • Unseen passages and reading comprehension
  • Sentence improvement and error spotting
  • Spellings, fillers and vocabulary

General Awareness

  • Current affairs — national and international importance
  • Sports, entertainment, books and authors, awards
  • Countries, capitals, currencies and international organisations
  • Indian history, polity, geography and economy
  • Science and technology developments

Mathematics (Expected in GK Paper)

  • Profit and loss, mixture and alligation, averages
  • Percentages, ratio and proportion
  • Time, work and distance; boats and streams
  • Mensuration and basic arithmetic

Civil Engineering

  • Engineering mathematics — calculus, linear algebra, probability
  • Structural engineering — beams, columns, RCC, steel design
  • Geotechnical engineering — soil mechanics, foundations, earth pressure
  • Water resources — hydrology, irrigation, dams, open-channel flow
  • Environmental engineering — water supply, sewerage, pollution control
  • Transportation engineering — highways, railways, traffic engineering
  • Surveying — chain, compass, levelling, theodolite, GPS basics

Selection Process

  1. Preliminary Screening Test / Written Examination — objective papers (GK, English, Civil Engineering)
  2. Mains Examination — as per MPSC notification for the post
  3. Personal Interview / Viva Voce
  4. Document Verification — originals of degree, caste certificate, domicile, etc.

Preparation Tips

  • Start with the Civil Engineering paper — it carries 200 of 400 marks; revise GATE-level core subjects.
  • For General English, practise Wren & Martin grammar rules and daily comprehension passages.
  • Cover 6 months of current affairs for GK — PIB, The Hindu/Indian Express summaries, and state news.
  • Solve previous MPSC AE / state PSC engineering papers under timed conditions.
  • Recommended books: Arihant General Knowledge; Quantitative Aptitude by Abhijit Guha (S Chand); High School English Grammar by Wren & Martin; Civil Engineering Conventional & Objective Type by J.K. Gupta (S Chand).
