Job description
The Application Architect is a technical leader responsible for designing, governing, and continuously evolving an organization's enterprise application landscape. This role ensures that all systems are scalable, secure, well-integrated, and strategically aligned with business objectives. Operating at the intersection of IT and the business, the Application Architect translates organizational complexity into coherent, future-ready architecture that supports long-term growth and operational efficiency. This role serves as a long-term strategic guardian of the enterprise application landscape — bridging operational realities with enterprise IT strategy, governing how systems connect, scale, and evolve, and acting as a technology translator who makes complexity understandable to executives and operations alike. Architecture Design & Governance:Define and maintain the enterprise application architecture blueprint across all organizational systems.Establish architecture standards, coding standards, patterns, and guardrails for enterprise, in-house, and third-party platforms.Govern application portfolio decisions — build vs. buy vs. integrate — aligned to organizational strategy.Lead architecture review boards and design approvals for significant application changes.Manage technical debt and drive rationalization of legacy systems toward target-state architecture. Systems Integration & Data Flow:Design integration architecture across enterprise applications and platforms.Define API strategies, middleware patterns, and data exchange standards (REST, event-driven, file-based).Ensure data consistency and integrity across all integrated systems.Review and approve interface design and messaging frameworks between internal and external platforms. Solution Design & Project Enablement:Provide architectural oversight for platform implementations, upgrades, and transformation initiatives.Translate business and regulatory requirements into scalable, compliant technical solutions.Guide project teams on solution design and technology selection across the application landscape.Conduct feasibility assessments for new technology initiatives including cloud, SaaS, and AI/ML.Support RFP/RFI processes with architecture input and vendor evaluation. Security, Compliance & Risk:Apply security-by-design principles across all application layers handling sensitive organizational data.Assess and mitigate architectural risks in proposed system changes and integrations.Define Disaster Recovery (DR) and Business Continuity Planning (BCP) strategies for critical applications.Collaborate with Information Security on data protection, access controls, and cyber resilience. Technical Debt Management:Identify, catalog, and prioritize technical debt across the enterprise application portfolio using structured assessment frameworks.Develop and maintain a technical debt register, tracking root causes, remediation options, estimated effort, and business risk exposure.Define and enforce policies for acceptable levels of technical debt, balancing speed of delivery with long-term architectural integrity.Lead legacy system rationalization initiatives — including decommissioning, re-platforming, or modernization — toward a target-state architecture.Collaborate with project and delivery teams to embed debt-awareness into design decisions, ensuring new work does not introduce undue debt.Quantify the business impact of unresolved technical debt (operational risk, maintenance cost, scalability constraints) and present findings to senior stakeholders.Establish debt reduction roadmaps with measurable milestones, linked to the broader enterprise application roadmap and investment planning cycles.
